Special offer
There are many questions that our tour of the Jewish heritage in Tangier seeks to answer, and although it seems strange, the history of the Jews in the world is closely linked to Tangier, Fez, Marrakech and all of Morocco.
History of the Jews in Morocco
There is a variety of opinions and historical data that trace the existence of a Jewish population in Tangier as far back as 70 CE, or even according to some chroniclers it can be dated back to 320 BC. Migrations related to King Solomon, the fall of Jerusalem or even the conquests of Alexander the Great.
However, the Spanish reconquest of Andalusia has been the trigger for the largest Jewish migration to the kingdom of Morocco at the end of the 15th century, tens of thousands of Sephardic Jews found a warm home among the Muslim population of Morocco, and Tangier welcomed an important part.
Since there was a Portuguese and Spanish occupation of the city (1471-1661) the Jewish community did not have many options to settle in Tangier, only when the city passed into the hands of the British monarchy in 1662, another larger wave of Jews arrived to Tangier.
The Jews of Tangier in the 20th century
In 1923 Tangier, became a city under an international regime, and declared as a free zone, this historical fact encouraged a lot of Jews to settle and become part of the Tangier population.
According to the records, at this time there were more than 10,000 Jews living in our city.
During the Second World War, the Jews of Tangier made a great contribution helping Eastern European Jews to find refuge in the city.
With the establishment of the state of Israel, the independence of Morocco and the annexation of Tangier by Morocco, migration had an opposite direction this time, mass departures towards Israel.
Of the Jews of Tangier, there are many very famous faces and personalities on world scenes and in Israel till today, that is why the new generations of Jews come to know their origins in Tangier, where their ancestors lived and visit the tombs on grandparents in Jewish cemeteries throughout Morocco.
