The heart of the universe
With the formation of Swyambhunath Temple, Kathmandu city was also formed. It is written in Swyambhu Purana (a book which describes how Swyambhu was formed) that the whole capital was a huge lake known as Nagdhaha (lake of snakes). A well-known goddess (Manjushree)from Tibet came to this valley and cut a ridge at the southern side of the valley and drained all the river and the Swyambhu hill emerged from the center of the valley.
The ridge where it was cut off is still there; a place called Chovar.
Since then, the valley became compatible to live and from ancient history, most of the kings made many temples and palaces for them and also in memory of their beloved once which made Kathmandu city a city of temples.

In Newari Legend it is believed to be made in the regrets of the killing of the King (Vikramditya) by sons. In Buddhist Legend it is known as “Jya Lung Kha Shor Chorten”. An old lady asks permission from King to construct a small stupa on her land. She asks the king to grant her the area of an animal skin she has and permission to construct. The king surprisingly grants the land and permission, surprising what area would animal skin covers. The old lady then makes a thin rope of the skins and covers the area where Boudhanath Stupa stands and the construction process runs so on.

According to Swyambhu Purana, it is said to be formed by cutting the river (Nagdhaha) by one of the ridges and let the water runoff by Goddess Manjushri from Tibet.
